Windows Server 2003

It’s been a long time since I had the pleasure of installing a Windows 2003 sever. Today was as good a day as any. I resurrected an old pIV with 2 x 80Gb SCSI drives in it. The silly thing was completely filled with tumbleweed sized dust balls. These were not just dust bunnies, they were Jackrabbits. The machine was an old web server backup utility but had been relegated to my closet for the last number of years… but now… yes now, it’s going to make a fine model-view-controller web server-upper.

Lesson: One never knows when one will need an old POS model computer so don’t give them away to your mom, dad, uncles or aunts… or grandparents! Besides, if anything, you can at least dream that someday you will take those old junkers and build yourself one amazing beowolf super computer! BWAHAHAHAH! See… I’m funny, I really am.

VPN WAN miniport?

For the life of me I had no idea what was going on with my VPN connection. I have two lappys and one was connecting while the other was not. Why? I need VPN to get my Subversion updates! ACK!

Why why why?! Both machines are configured exactly the same! …or are they?

Loh! They are *not* in fact configured the same. Aaaaaaand the light bulb. Ping!

Enter Sun Microsystem’s VirtualBox software. A wonderful tool… except when you want your VPN to work.

I don’t have the time to determine why it is that VBox messes with my VPN, but I imagine there is a better workaround than the one I employed. I simply uninstalled the software (I’m not really using it) and that solved my issue.

So, if you’ve lost VPN connectivity and you have Vbox installed. You could try uninstalling VBox. And if that works for you, please find a way for me to have both on my lappys ok?
